About
The GEORGE project develops new sensor and platform technologies for monitoring the ocean carbon system. The new technologies will be integrated into the three European marine Research Infrastructures, Euro-Argo, EMSO and ICOS.
As part of this effort, the project is launching training sessions aimed at technicians and scientists working in RIs.
The training sessions, called Technical Forums, give you the unique opportunity to be the first to learn about these novel technologies, enhance your knowledge of existing technologies in the three RIs as well as develop new connections with your peers. The Technical Forums provide the GEORGE project team the valuable opportunity to engage with the users of these technologies and implement this feedback in the development process.
The three Technical Forums offered by GEORGE will focus on three topics:
- Platform technologies (in May 2024)
- New sensor technologies (in 2025)
- Data management (in 2026)
For whom?
The first Technical Forum is designed for technicians and scientists working in Research Infrastructures. Even though the content is most suitable for professionals with already some experience in the field, PhD students or young scientists are also welcome to apply.
The first Technical Forum will focus on Platform technologies:
- Argo (Arvor-DO + CTS5) used by Euro-Argo
- SEAEXPLORER and EGIM platforms used by EMSO
- CO2 measurements onboard commercial vessels & Flux measurements from Sailbuoys used by ICOS
By the end of the training session, you will be able to…
- Understand the technical structure of the platform
- Describe how the platform has been developed (e.g. by research institutions, SMEs, mixed)
- Understand the performance of the platform through use cases
- Have a basic understanding of how to operate the platform
- Understand the capabilities of the platform for integrating new sensors
When & where?
The training is organized on 21–24 May 2024, at The Institut de la MEr de Villefranche (IMEV) lab in Villefranche-sur-Mer, France, and consists of four days of lectures and practical sessions. The nature of the sessions is collaborative, and all participants are welcome to share their knowledge with the group. The on-site training is supported by online training materials with some exercises before and after the on-site training.
The training is free of charge, but travel expenses must be covered by the participant or their home organization. The organisers will provide tips about connections and accommodation to the accepted participants.
What do we expect from you?
- Prepare to be present on-site on all days of the training session
- Read the online introduction and complete the online training exercises connected to the session on the GEORGE online training platform (published in April 2024)
- Participate actively and to share your knowledge with the group
How to apply?
The application form for the first Technical Forum opens 26 January 2024. Submit an application through this form by 13 February 2024. The successful candidates will be informed of their acceptance via email by the end of February. Good luck!
